THE ASSEMBLY

Where is Christ’s assembly today? The Spirit and bride are very soon to say “Come” to Him (Rev. 22: 17) — Where that bride?

Christ Himself said that He would build His assembly, and that it would not be overcome by Satan’s attempts.

Matthew 16: 18

And I also, I say unto thee that thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and hades’ gates shall not prevail against it.

The practical existence of this began with the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost. He came to persons who were assembled together.

Acts 2: 1-4

And when the day of Pentecost was now accomplishing, they were all together in one place. And there came suddenly a sound out of heaven as of a violent impetuous blowing, and filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues, as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with [the] Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave to them to speak forth.

This company – His assembly – was where He added persons who were converted by the preaching. The assembly is the normal place for a believer with the Holy Spirit to be.

Acts 2: 38, 46-47

And Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptised, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for remission of sins, and ye will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

. . .

And every day, being constantly in the temple with one accord, and breaking bread in [the] house, they received their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people; and the Lord added [to the assembly] daily those that were to be saved.

The Apostle Paul served to produce local assemblies in various places.

2 Corintians 1: 1

Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by God’s will, and the brother Timotheus, to the assembly of God which is in Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia.

Romans 16: 16

Salute one another with a holy kiss. All the assemblies of Christ salute you.

There can only be one assembly – one body – in a place, as Paul wrote to those in Corinth.

1 Corintians 10: 17

Because we, [being] many, are one loaf, one body; for we all partake of that one loaf.

1 Corintians 12: 12-14, 18-20, 27

For even as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of the body, being many, are one body, so also [is] the Christ. For also in [the power of] one Spirit we have all been baptised into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bondmen or free, and have all been given to drink of one Spirit. For also the body is not one member but many.

. . .

But now God has set the members, each one of them in the body, according as it has pleased [him]. But if all were one member, where the body? But now the members [are] many, and the body one.

. . .

Now ye are Christ’s body, and members in particular.

1 Corinthians 1: 13

Is the Christ divided? has Paul been crucified for you? or have ye been baptised unto the name of Paul?

The Lord Himself is in relation to these local assemblies, as belonging to Him in each place. This is evidenced by how He told the Apostle John to write to each one.

Revelation 1: 10-11

I became in [the] Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a great voice as of a trumpet, saying, What thou seest write in a book, and send to the seven assemblies: to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamos, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

Sorrowfully, there is extensive departure from the truth that was given through Paul. Nevertheless, genuine believers have been given (again, through Paul) the principle necessary for the assembly to continue practically until the Lord’s coming – this is separation from evil.

2 Timothy 2: 19-22

Yet the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, [The] Lord knows those that are his; and, Let every one who names the name of [the] Lord withdraw from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also wooden and earthen; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If therefore one shall have purified himself from these, [in separating himself from them], he shall be a vessel to honour, sanctified, serviceable to the Master, prepared for every good work. But youthful lusts flee, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those that call upon the Lord out of a pure heart.

Read John Darby's Separation From Evil God’s Principle Of Unity as the truth that leads to the body existing practically.
